If they describe buying links in bulk or “our proprietary network,” the links they build will either do nothing or actively hurt your site.

“What happens to my SEO work if I cancel?”

Everything produced for your site should belong to you. Content, optimized pages, technical fixes, Google Analytics access. If an agency cannot confirm you own your data and content, they are creating dependency, not value.

“How do you report results, and what metrics are in the report?”

The answer should include organic traffic from Google Search Console, keyword position tracking for your target terms, and conversions or leads attributable to organic search. If reporting is limited to vanity metrics like “domain authority improved” without traffic or conversion data, the reports are measuring effort, not results.

Pricing: What Houston SEO Companies Charge

SEO pricing in Houston ranges from $400 per month to $8,000 per month or more. Here is what you actually get at each tier.

$400 to $800/month: Generally a freelancer or very small agency. Suitable for businesses in low-competition niches that need basic optimization and local SEO work. Do not expect aggressive content production or technical depth at this price point.

Keyword stuffing on your pages: If the agency’s “optimization” involves repeating your target keyword 20 times per page, they are using outdated tactics that Google penalizes. Modern SEO is about relevance and usefulness, not keyword density.

No clear strategy documentation: A legitimate agency should be able to hand you a written strategy document that explains what they will do each month, why, and what success looks like. If the plan is verbal and vague, the accountability structure does not exist.
